The Volusia County Community Program provides meals for children during the summer

The Volusia County Community Assistance Division is sponsoring a summer food service program through August 12 to provide free breakfast and lunch to youth 18 and under.

“This program has always existed and is needed,” said Clayton Jackson, Community Services Manager for Volusia County. “It’s not something that was spurred on because of COVID. During the school year, public schools provide food for children in the school system. But during summer vacation, we provide food through community sites like churches, the YMCA, daycare centers and summer camps.

Jackson said this program is mandated by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

“Each site on the list must be located in a school zone where at least 50 percent or more of the children in that district receive free or reduced lunch,” Jackson said. “The good thing is that there is no income eligibility. There is no prior registration required for our sites. Families with children 18 or younger can come to any site for breakfast or lunch.

The federally funded program provides free, nutritious meals to children 18 and under in geographic areas where at least 50% of children are eligible to receive free or reduced school meals. Several sites participate in this program. All sites will be closed on the 4th of July for Independence Day.
