Tell us about your team This year’s winner was the Palestine Wildcats.

Below is a copy of their submission.

“OUR ATHLETIC COACH, BETHANY COYNE, LOST HER HUSBAND MICHAEL (A JR COACH FROM PALESTINE) TO A TRAGIC CAR ACCIDENT AT THE END OF MAY.

BETHANY COYNE IS STILL OUR ATHLETIC COACH AND THE MOTHER OF THEIR ONE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER. COACH COYNE AND MICHAEL BOUGHT THEIR DREAM HOME 2 YEARS AGO AND BETHANY IS NOW

LEFT WITH TRYING TO MAINTAIN THIS HOUSE. COACH BETHANY COYNE HAD MENTIONED TO ME THAT SHE HAS SOME HOLES IN HER BACKYARD THAT NEED TO BE FILLED.

AT SUMMER CAMP, I MENTIONED IT TO THE TEAM AND ASKED IF ANYBODY CAN COME HELP. MYSELF AND ANOTHER COACH WENT AND ARE GOING TO YOUR SAND YARD, NOT KNOWING HOW MANY WILL COME TO HELP.

WE JUST COMPLETED ANOTHER DAY OF SUMMER CAMP AND IT WAS THE WEEK THAT TEMPS WERE IN THE 100S AT 11:00 AM. I KNEW MOST OF THE COACHES WILL BE THERE AND I HOPE AT LEAST SOME PLAYERS WILL MEET AFTER CAMP TO HELP.

IT WAS A GREAT FEELING TO SEE 16 OF OUR PLAYERS AND 8 OF OUR COACHES SHOW UP TO HELP.

I KNOW THIS IS NOT A LOT COMPARED TO WHAT OTHERS DO, BUT AS A COACH, ONE OF THE TRAITS YOU HOPE YOUR PLAYERS WILL LEARN IN SCHOOL AND ATHLETICS IS EMPATHY AND COMPASSION FOR OTHERS.

I THINK WE AS COACHES HOPE THAT OUR ATHLETES WE COACH CARRY SOMETHING WITH THEM IN THE REAL WORLD THAT WILL MAKE THEM GREAT MEN AND WOMEN. SEEING OUR ATHLETES GIVING THEIR TIME AND SHOWING LOVE FOR OTHERS GIVES ME HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS COUNTRY. I ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT BEING INVOLVED IN ATHLETICS IS ONE OF THE LAST AREAS OF LIFE THAT TEACHES BOYS TO BE GOOD MEN AND GIRLS TO BE GOOD WOMEN. THIS SIMPLE ACT OF KINDNESS BY OUR TEAM IS A GOOD EXAMPLE.”

Cindy Smoak will be presenting the award to the team in the coming weeks.
