Community program

Nashoba Neighbors is now a non-profit organization; the first community program is May 20

Nashoba Neighbors is a new, non-profit, volunteer-run organization that will serve Bolton, Berlin and Lancaster.

Having recently achieved 501 (c) 3 nonprofit status, the group seeks to coordinate and train community volunteers to fill service gaps in communities.

According to numerous surveys, the majority of older people would like to stay at home as they get older. Despite the services in local communities, there are still unmet needs for those who wish to stay in their homes as long as they can.

Nashoba Neighbors volunteers will respond to members’ interests and requests for support.

The services provided will include:

• Transportation – days, evenings and weekends;

• Small home repairs and occasional cleaning help;

• Regular friendly visits and well-being check-in;

• Connection to other people and resources in the community; and

• Social activities, interest groups and learning opportunities.

Nashoba Neighbors is now an IRS recognized non-profit organization. The board represents the three cities where the group will recruit members later this year. They include: Bob Blair, Mary Ciummo, Mary Anne Cleary, Al Ferry, Susan Henry, Catherine Pfau, Ray Pfau and Alix Turner.

Council members are involved in other local organizations that serve older people such as Councils on Aging, Friends of Bolton Seniors and Berlin Seniors.

Nashoba Neighbor’s first event will take place on Thursday, May 20, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., via Zoom. The group is partnering with AARP Massachusetts to bring their HomeFit presentation to communities. A trained AARP expert will teach people how to modify their home to become their home for life. They will take a room-by-room approach to show the changes you can make to live safely and comfortably in your home as you age.

The conference is free and open to people of all ages.
