Bloomington Wins Arbor Day Foundation Honors

BLOOMINGTON — The Arbor Day Foundation presented the city of Bloomington with a Community Growth Award and recognized it as Tree City USA 2021.

“The City is thrilled to receive this award in recognition of its global vision and hard work to ensure a sustainable, generational urban forest,” said Dave Lamb, city forester and assistant superintendent of parks, in a press release. . “The administration, elected officials, staff and residents of the City of Bloomington place great value on our trees. Bloomington is very proud of its Urban Forest and of this recognition from the Tree City USA (TCU) Committee.”

A growth award is given to a community alongside recognition from Tree City USA for showing environmental improvement and a higher level of tree care. The award recognizes major annual milestones and activities in five categories under a points-based system, including team building, tree and forest measurement, work planning, work execution, and building the community framework.

“Bloomington is now part of an Illinois communities team that is charging the TCU Growth Award program and making a national statement,” Mike Brunk of Illinois Urban and Community Forestry said in a press release. “Illinois’ community forestry programs are among the most advanced programs in the nation and the TCU Growth Award is a great stage to display that value. Illinois’ TCU Growth Award communities are performing and I look forward with looking forward to Bloomington’s work in 2022.”

The city of Bloomington also held an Arbor Day celebration on April 29 where it dedicated a tree to Trinity Lutheran School, sponsored by the city’s beautification committee.
