Portland state football player Malik Thirdgill has been named to the Big Sky Conference Community Service Team for 2021.
Thirdgill, a junior from the Viking football team, has been active on the field, in the classroom and as a participant in various extracurricular activities in his community.
The Community Service Team, now in its third year, recognizes student football athletes who have dedicated their time to helping others and going above and beyond to make an impact on their campus and community. The community service team is made up of one football player from each of the league’s 13 competing institutions. The winners were nominated by their respective head coaches.
Thirdgill of Central Catholic High School in Portland has just completed his third season of competition with the Vikings. He has been involved in a myriad of activities off the pitch. He was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee as an executive representative. The objective of this committee is to improve the overall student-athlete experience by fostering opportunities, protecting the well-being of the student-athlete and fostering a positive image of the student-athlete.
Amid social unrest across the country over the past year, Thirdgill and his SAAC co-members immediately got to work. With Sofi Papastamos from the soccer team and soccer teammate Brady Brick, Thirdgill was the co-creator of a “Social Justice Team”. The goal was to get PSU track teams to learn more about social justice in the United States and around the world. They developed ideas and a lesson plan that all Viking teams will choose to learn, learn and then present on social media. “We want to let our student-athletes know what’s going on in the world,” Thirdgill said. “It’s easy to see it on social media, but getting involved, we think, will have a more lasting effect.”
Thirdgill has also been involved in PSU’s freshman student-athlete mentorship program.
Additionally, the Portlander native volunteers with Holy Redeemer Athletics and the Big Yard Foundation.
