Below is a copy of their submission.

“OUR ATHLETIC COACH, BETHANY COYNE HAS LOST HER HUSBAND MICHAEL (A PALESTINE JR HIGH COACH) TO A TRAGIC CAR ACCIDENT AT THE END OF MAY.

BETHANY COYNE IS STILL OUR ATHLETIC COACH AND THE MOTHER OF THEIR ONE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER. COACH COYNE AND MICHAEL BOUGHT THEIR DREAM HOME 2 YEARS AGO AND BETHANY IS NOW

LEFT WITH TRYING TO MAINTAIN THIS HOUSE. COACH BETHANY COYNE HAD MENTIONED TO ME THAT SHE HAD SOME HOLES IN HER GARDEN THAT NEED TO BE FILLED.

AT SUMMER CAMP, I MENTIONED IT TO THE TEAM AND ASKED IF ANYBODY CAN COME HELP. MYSELF AND ANOTHER COACH WENT AND WENT INTO A YARD OF SAND, NOT KNOWING HOW MANY WILL SHOW UP TO HELP.

WE JUST COMPLETED ANOTHER DAY OF SUMMER CAMP AND THIS WAS THE WEEK THAT TEMPATURES WERE IN THE 100S AT 11:00 AM. I KNEW MOST OF THE COACHES WILL BE THERE AND I HOPE AT LEAST SOME PLAYERS WILL MEET AFTER CAMP TO HELP.

IT WAS A GREAT FEELING TO SEE 16 OF OUR PLAYERS AND 8 OF OUR COACHES CAME TO HELP.

I KNOW THIS IS NOT MUCH COMPARED TO WHAT OTHERS DO, BUT AS A COACH, ONE OF THE TRAITS YOU HOPE YOUR PLAYERS WILL LEARN IN SCHOOL AND ATHLETICS IS EMPATHY AND COMPASSION FOR OTHERS.

I THINK WE ALL AS COACHES HOPE THAT OUR ATHLETES WE COACH CARRY SOMETHING WITH THEM IN THE REAL WORLD WHICH WILL MAKE THEM GREAT MEN AND WOMEN. SEE OUR ATHLETES GIVING THEIR TIME AND SHOWING LOVE FOR OTHERS GIVES ME HOPE IN THE FUTURE OF THIS COUNTRY. I ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT BEING INVOLVED IN ATHLETICS IS ONE OF THE LAST ARENAS OF LIFE THAT TEACH BOYS TO BE GOOD MEN AND GIRLS TO BE GOOD WOMEN. IT’S SIMPLE OUR TEAM’S ACT OF KINDNESS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE.

Cindy Smoak will be presenting the award to the team in the coming weeks.
