CHICAGO, BAD. – Local Elks Lodges in every state across the country, as well as Guam, Puerto Rico, the Philippines and the Panama Canal Zone, will be busy helping our communities this holiday season. Thousands of financially struggling families will receive food baskets and gifts, for example, Rockland Lodge # 1008 will donate 100 or more food baskets this year in cooperation with the local Salvation Army.
Elk volunteers will visit thousands of hospitalized veterans who have protected our freedoms. The Elks Take the Oath “As long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks will never forget them.” The Elks support both active military forces and veterans. Elk provide food, comfort care items, therapeutic items and gifts, organize holiday celebrations and recreational activities at bases and hospitals, and stand ready to meet any need when are called. Last year alone, the value of Elks’ contributions to the nation’s heroes provided more than $ 45 million to more than 300 Veterans Administration medical centers, clinics and care facilities.
The Elks will receive thousands of scholarship applications in December from high school students across the country, with nearly $ 5 million given away each year, with Maine students receiving $ 44,000, while Rockland Lodge # 1008 gives away 20,000 additional dollars to Midcoast students. The Elks Community Investment Program (CIP) will award nearly $ 15 million to enrich our communities, and Midcoast of Maine receives $ 10,500 from Rockland Lodge # 1008 CIP projects.
