Community service in exchange for tuition

The application period is open for the scholarship for Californians for all academic bodies until May 15. Interested candidates and organizations can apply through this website.

Dr. Erin Pearse, professor of mathematics and grants writer for the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scholarship, told KSBY, “The scholarship provides $10,000 to the student in exchange for 450 hours of service work performed in a nonprofit or government agency, focusing their work on climate action or K-12 education or food insecurity.

Fellows would be paid through a stipend through financial aid.

Bradley Kyker, the College Corps lead investigator at Cal Poly, said, “The reason we’re really excited about this is that it’s going to be disbursed through financial aid, not like in the Therefore, we can recruit 85, 40, or whatever type of vernacular we have called Dreamer students to circumvent any type of work, eligibility issues, or challenges.

Kyker added, “We’re quite certain that our financial aid office here at Cal Poly and the CSU Chancellor’s office will likely want some sort of financial need check for the applicant to occur. It remains to be seen. how it will take shape, but rest assured it will be in place.

Cal Poly is part of a consortium of schools that includes Allan Hancock and Cuesta Colleges, as well as California State University, Long Beach.

“The spirit of the grant is that we want to help people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to higher education,” Kyker said.

To apply, a person must be a student at one of the participating schools and looking for part-time work to get through the school year.

“The Cal Poly Consortium is going to put about 315 fellows there, which is huge. I mean, 20 is a big program, so 300 is just huge,” Dr. Pearse explained.

Students and organizations can participate in the scholarship, which is part of a larger initiative created by the Governor of California. The grant is administered by the California Volunteers program.

Organizations can also apply to participate as community hosts.

“They must be a non-profit organization or a government agency. And so nonprofit is 501c3 or 501c as long as they don’t lobby. So one of the restrictions on activities is that they cannot be involved in anything political, not even voter registration,” Dr Pearse said.
