CMR University, recently announced the implementation of the “Community Service Program” (CSP) for all their undergraduate and postgraduate students under the Common Core (CCC) starting from the academic year 2022 -23. Under the program, students are expected to complete four lakh hours of community service over a four-year period.
According to the institute, CSP is launched with a vision to create a culture of community involvement and public service among students. After initiating various student volunteering activities in different spheres as pilot projects, the university officially launched the program on September 21, 2022 at the OMBR campus of CMR University, Bengaluru.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Dr Tejaswini Ananthkumar said, “It is very encouraging to see that a new age university like CMRU has engaged in community service with such commitment and such fervor. This is the first time that community service is designed to be an integral part of the curriculum, where all undergraduate and postgraduate students from all disciplines are mandated
complete a minimum number of volunteer hours as part of the graduation requirement. This will make a big difference in the outlook of students. I am happy that students from various common core disciplines are involved in this community initiative. I salute this pioneering initiative taken by CMRU to bring about social transformation.
Intertwined with the common core of the program, the Common Core Courses (CCC) are offered to all students, regardless of the academic program they are pursuing. The Common Core Courses (CCC) are designed on the foundations of the three main aspects, namely – Preparing for Success, Contributing to Society and Knowing Yourself and Your Community. Below
The Contribution to Society pillar, the Community Service Program (CSP), aims to instill empathy in students, develop a love of service to others, and help bring about positive societal change.
As part of this, students will engage in community service activities through various Social Service Wings (SSW) within the CMRU ecosystem and also with numerous NGO partners.
The Community Service Program (CSP) is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Community Service Program (CSP) primarily focuses its engagement in the areas of education, women’s empowerment, livelihoods, environment, health and hygiene. These community service activities will take place both on campus and off campus through offline and online modes.
