Athens NAACP wants community meeting with superintendent’s selection – WGAU

Alvin Sheats, a former Athens-Clarke County commissioner who is now president of the Athens branch of the NAACP, wants a public hearing before the Clarke County School Board gives final approval to Robbie’s selection. Hooker as the next Clarke County School Superintendent. Sheats wants a community reunion with Hooker, who was named the sole finalist to replace outgoing superintendent Xernona Thomas. Hooker is a former principal of Clarke Central High School.

From the Athens NAACP…

The Athens NAACP is calling on the Clarke County School Board to hold a community meeting with the “single finalist” for school superintendent before it is confirmed because “we care about our children… “.

Branch President Alvin Sheats said the selection of a single finalist for the important position without community input “is confusing and contrary to best practice in selecting a candidate for such a key position to serve our community”.

In a letter this week to school board members, Sheats said the NAACP is “deeply concerned” about the method followed “in selecting a candidate to become the next superintendent of the SDCC.”

The board announced Dr. Robbie Hooker as the sole finalist for school superintendent, pending a final confirmation vote. Dr. Hooker would assume all responsibilities effective October 10, 2022. The current superintendent, Dr. Xernona Thomas, will retire at the end of this year.

A former principal of Clarke Central High School, Dr. Hooker is currently Superintendent of Schools for Social Circle City, a position he has held since 2019.

The selection process, Sheats says, “lacked any semblance of transparency or community involvement” and did not follow “minimal fairness or equal opportunity protocols.”

Not giving the community the courtesy of input and transparency is unacceptable and “puts a cloud over your candidate and (creates) discord in the community,” he adds.

He says the community needs to hear from Dr. Hooker before being confirmed.

Mr Sheats writes: ‘Therefore, we respectfully request that you schedule a meeting at City Hall with Dr Hooker and the Athens Clarke County community prior to your meeting to vote on his formal nomination.’

Copies of the Sheats’ letter were forwarded to the public school’s superintendent and accrediting agency Cognia, which has held accreditation status “under review” from SDCC for several years.
