Today, the National League of Cities (NLC) announced Spokane, WA for the Leadership in Community Resilience program. Spokane is one of eight cities to be recognized under this program and will receive $10,000 in direct financial support as well as technical assistance and advisory services from NLC staff and partners to help them achieve the community-specific resilience goals.

“On behalf of City Council, we are delighted to learn that Spokane has received the National League of Cities grant,” said Councilwoman Betsy Wilkerson. “Our political staff continues to take action and move Spokane forward on initiatives important to our community, such as environmental justice, particularly focusing on our most vulnerable communities who are disproportionately exposed to climate impacts. This grant will allow the Council to further community engagement and education on issues that immediately harm our community, such as toxic smoke from wildfires and the heat waves that Spokane experienced last summer.

The City Council’s Sustainability Action Subcommittee Equity Task Force submitted a proposal detailing resilience challenges in Spokane and proposed projects that could support local capacity-building activities such as workshops for municipal staff, residents and/or non-profit partners. Specifically, the Equity Working Group will partner with the ZoNE Project and APIC Spokane who will provide capacity and/or resources to help build resilience in underserved and heavily impacted communities in Spokane by reducing environmental health disparities exacerbated by climate change.

“This is a big win for the City of Spokane,” said City Council Equity and Inclusion Officer Alex Gibilisco. “This will give us the opportunity to focus our environmental justice plan on people who would otherwise be the most affected members of our community.”
